Don’t let your skin suffer when the thermometer plummets
There is always so much talk about summer skin, glow-inducing products and SPF’s galore but what about the colder months that lie ahead? Central heating and temperamental weather can wreak havoc on your skin, causing much stress on your delicate skin barrier. Redness, dehydration (which can lead to fine lines) and dry patches are all common ailments when the temperature drops, but it’s not all bad news. Simple switches to your current skincare routine will make the world of difference to both your skin now, but also when season’s change yet again. It’s time to arm yourself with hydrating buys and skincare hacks that ward off windburn, parched cheeks and sensitivity Here are six easy steps to fight off skin winter blues…
Step 1: Choose a richer cleanser
We love a satisfying foaming cleanser, but they’re a much better choice when the weather is warmer as they strip skin (in a good way) from sebum and sweat. In contrast, richer and thicker formulas are ideal in colder weather as your skin will be drier than normal and need the extra hydration, not to mention the comfort factor that denser cleansing lotions and creams lend to skin.
Step 2: Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
Dull, lacklustre skin is unfortunately a given when the weather turns. To get your glow back, it’s important to shift those dead skin cells that lie on the surface of your skin and give a sallow grey tinge to your complexion. Opt for gentle liquid-based exfoliators that don’t require too much scrubbing. The least amount of friction, the more your skin will thank you. Over-zealous scrubbing or peeling can overstimulate oily skin and leave dry skin feeling even drier. Regular exfoliating will also ensure that your subsequent products are absorbed more effectively and work to their optimum. Look for skin-quenching ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (the wonder kid of thirsty skin) and skin-calming niacinamide that are super gentle and don’t dry out the skin.
Step 3: Follow with a serum
For uber-moisturising, anti-ageing benefits and hardworking ingredients that pack a punch and target all skin concerns, nothing beats a serum. It’s an absolute must for winter skin. Although serums are thin in consistency, they’re a potent addition to your skincare routine, especially in the winter when hydration is key. Take care to choose your serum wisely depending on your skin type as some active ingredients, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA’s) and retinol may be too harsh for sensitive skins Instead, try more easily-tolerated options, such as peptides and bakuchiol that will easily adapt to skin that is more prone to irritation.
Step 4: Add a facial oil
Facial oils have an undeserving bad rep, mainly because of their greasy texture. But we can honestly reveal there is nothing better or more of a useful addition than a facial oil in your winter skincare routine. A good quality facial oil will lock in moisture and hydrate the skin like nothing else. Consider it the eight glasses of water quota for your skin. Facial oils are also very versatile to use. Add a few drops to your day or night moisturiser for an added boost or wear neat on freshly-cleansed skin. Whichever way you choose to use an oil, we guarantee your skin will be super-soft, ultra-moisturised and have a touch of radiance too. What’s not to love?
Step 5: Don’t forget your SPF
Although it’s probably the last thing you consider putting on your skin post-summer holidays, don’t let the lack of sunshine deceive you. The cornerstone of any anti-ageing routine is to wear SPF every single day, no matter what the weather. Did you know that the sun’s rays can be magnified when there is snow or ice around? We’re not suggesting you apply suncream during a downpour, but you should still ensure that your day moisturiser or makeup base includes a high SPF, so you’re well and truly covered from any rays that may shine through the clouds.
Step 6: Avoid hot showers and baths
When it’s cold and dark outside, it’s very tempting to run a boiling hot bath or spend longer than usual in an extra steamy shower, but your skin won’t thank you for it. Water that is too hot will instantly remove moisture from your skin, making dry matters worse. Be conscious of the temperature and the time you take washing and wallowing. The drier your skin the more sensitive and irritating in the long run and the more raw and exposed.
